Who was there? On this page we have posted student projects relating to those who fought at Te Ranga on 21 June, and in a few cases, those who fought at Gate Pa - Pukehinahina in April 1864.
Working largely in groups of three, students in HIST 316 New Zealand Social History at Victoria University of Wellington were asked to create a spreadsheet listing names and details of groups of British and Māori soldiers who fought at Te Ranga. Several groups examined lists from Gate Pa for purposes of comparison. The sources from which the spreadsheets were built were mainly primary sources. The information which appeared on the sources varied in nature and in degree of detail.
The spreadsheets were constructed with the aim of 1) producing an accessible and searchable list of people by name; 2) rendering raw primary source materials into an organised set of data- ie, sorting by category as well as by name; 3) to make categories as well as names searchable; 4) to think about how such material might help answer wider historical questions about the conflicts, and to be aware of the limits of the sources - i.e., revealing the unevenness or partial nature of the source and the circumstances and purposes for which the information was recorded.
Each group produced a commentary describing the process they used and decisions made as they underwent the task.
They were also asked to produce a carte-de-visite for someone who was present at Te Ranga or Gate Pa. This could be either a person who featured on the source they had worked with, or someone from another relevant source.
The project was designed to introduce skills of digital history through an experience of collaborative learning. In the carte-de-visite and the spreadsheet we have two very different ways to visualise history.
The projects produced by the groups appear below. In the near future we intend to bring the material from the projects together to produce two consolidated spreadsheets: one listing Māori who fought at Te Ranga, and one listing British who fought at Te Ranga and Gate Pa.
A listing of recorded participants at the Battle of Gate Pa (Pukehinahina) and the Battle of Te Ranga prepared by Wendy Napier-Walker in April 2014 is also available here. Our thanks to Wendy for making this work available.
